Groove Freedom Series 01/

The 8th Note Hi Hat Pattern

The first book in the Groove Freedom Series offers you an in-depth study of playing drum grooves that use an 8th note pattern on the Hi Hats.

Within the book you will find 44 pages of well thought out, progressive material. As well as a whole host of exercises, it covers counting, dissecting patterns and practice techniques to ensure you can make the most of the book and achieve rapid progress. Also included is an audio CD containing over 50 clear and concise key example tracks to help with your practice.

Chapter 1 Getting Started: Deals with learning how to play the basic 8th note Hi Hat groove and then developing freedom and syncopation with the snare drum and bass drum. This will ensure you can happily manipulate this basic groove to place Bass and Snare drums on any 16th note in a bar and are aware of the building blocks of groove drumming.

Chapter 2 Developing Your Sound: Is the subtlest but in my opinion the most important and challenging chapter in the book. In Chapter 1 your primary focus has been placed on timing and coordination, the “when” and “what” to hit and Chapter 2 tackles the “how” to hit. It centres on an in depth look at Hi Hat accenting, Snare Drum grace notes and opening the Hi Hat within a groove. This is where your playing will come alive and take on a smooth and flowing feel.

Chapter 3 Increasing Your Groove Freedom: Now you will take things up a gear, keeping on board the flow you have honed in Chapter 2. You will now look at further developing your coordination with a special focus on the bass drum. As you work through the more advanced bass drum options the challenge is increased by having to keep your mind’s eye on the quality and tone of the Hi Hat and Snare Drum work.

Book One makes a fun and challenging foundation module to prepare you for the timing, coordination and internal dynamics required from a modern groove drummer.

“The second you lay eyes on it you’ll be taken by the cover. Personally I love its design, bright and completely different to most drum books we see now. Produced to a high material standard as well as content, this one [Groove Freedom Book 1] will take you from first tentative hit of the Hi Hat through to competent groove player”.
